How to Test Distilled Water Quality | Complete Identification Standard

1. Introduction

Distilled water is widely used in laboratories, scientific research, biopharmaceuticals, and industrial manufacturing. Water quality directly affects experimental accuracy, production safety, and product stability. It is essential to master professional distilled water testing methods to ensure water quality meets international and national standards (GB/T 6682-2022, USP, EP).

2. Quick Distilled Water Test (No Professional Equipment)

For daily inspection and preliminary screening, users can judge distilled water quality through simple visual observation and portable tools.

2.1 Visual & Odor Inspection

Qualified distilled water is colorless, transparent, free of suspended particles, turbidity, foam and peculiar smell. Cloudy, yellowish, odorous water indicates incomplete purification or secondary pollution.

2.2 TDS Test (Most Efficient Method)

TDS reflects soluble solid impurities in water. High-quality distilled water features TDS between 0–5ppm. If TDS>10ppm, the water contains excessive ionic impurities and is not suitable for precision experiments and pharmaceutical preparation.

2.3 Water Hardness Test

After dropping hardness test reagent, qualified distilled water turns pure blue (zero calcium and magnesium ions). Pink or red color means excessive hardness and easy scaling.

2.4 Heavy Metal Test

Distilled water with qualified heavy metal content appears light yellow. Red color indicates heavy metal exceeding the standard, which is prohibited for biopharmaceutical and laboratory use.

3. Professional Laboratory Testing Standards

For commercial acceptance, laboratory research and pharmaceutical production, professional instrument detection is required to obtain accurate water quality data.

3.1 Conductivity & Resistivity (Core Index)

The fewer ions in the water, the lower the conductivity and the higher the purity. Grade 1 lab distilled water: conductivity ≤0.07μS/cm, resistivity ≥15MΩ·cm. Industrial distilled water: conductivity ≤2μS/cm.

3.2 pH Value Detection

Pure distilled water absorbs carbon dioxide in the air, with a normal pH range of 5.4–6.8. pH below 5.0 or above 7.5 indicates unqualified water quality.

3.3 TOC, Anion, Heavy Metal & Microbial Test

Professional-grade distilled water requires qualified TOC (total organic carbon), anions, heavy metal content, and zero harmful bacteria, meeting GMP and GLP laboratory standards.

4. GB/T 6682-2022 Water Grade Standard

4.1 Grade 1 Water

Conductivity ≤0.07μS/cm, ultra-low organic content, no impurities, sterile, for precision analysis and pharmaceutical production.

4.2 Grade 2 Water

Conductivity ≤0.20μS/cm, suitable for daily laboratory analysis and research.

4.3 Grade 3 Water

Conductivity ≤5.0μS/cm, widely used for industrial cleaning and solution preparation.

5. Fast Qualification Judgment Rules

1. TDS value between 0–5ppm 2. Clear, odorless and impurity-free 3. Zero water hardness and qualified heavy metal index 4. Stable pH value at 5.4–6.8
