For an industrial water distillation project, equipment delivery is not the end of the purchasing process. Factory Acceptance Testing, commonly known as FAT, can provide an important opportunity for buyers to verify equipment functions before shipment.
A well-organized FAT should be based on the technical specifications agreed upon between the equipment supplier and the buyer. The purpose is not simply to turn on the machine, but to confirm that key mechanical, electrical, control, and instrumentation functions operate as expected.
The first area to check is the equipment configuration. Buyers can verify the model, dimensions, materials, components, valves, pumps, electrical cabinets, sensors, and other major items against the approved technical documents.
The control system should then be tested. Depending on the design, this may include PLC operation, HMI display, temperature monitoring, pressure monitoring, water-level control, conductivity monitoring, alarm functions, interlocks, and emergency shutdown.
Safety functions deserve particular attention. A distiller may include protection against insufficient water level, abnormal temperature, excessive pressure, pump failure, or other operating conditions. These functions should be tested rather than simply listed in the documentation.
Water-quality monitoring is another important part of the acceptance process. Where conductivity or other online instruments are included, the buyer should verify sensor installation, signal transmission, display values, alarms, and data recording functions.
For automated industrial systems, communication between instruments, PLC, HMI, and external control systems may also need to be checked.
FAT can reduce the risk of discovering major configuration or control problems after the equipment arrives at the customer's facility. It also gives operators an opportunity to become familiar with the equipment before installation.
After FAT, documentation should be reviewed carefully. Depending on the project, documents may include equipment drawings, electrical diagrams, operating manuals, maintenance instructions, component lists, testing records, and calibration documents.
For international projects, a clearly defined FAT procedure can improve communication between the manufacturer, EPC contractor, system integrator, and end user.
A professional water distillation equipment supplier should therefore treat FAT as part of project quality management rather than as a simple pre-shipment inspection.
