ASTM D119324: Why Laboratory Water Is No Longer Simply About “Distillation”

Laboratories have long been important users of distilled water.

However, the discussion around laboratory water is changing. Instead of focusing only on how water is produced, laboratories increasingly need to consider whether the final water quality is appropriate for the intended analytical application.

ASTM D1193-24, *Standard Specification for Reagent Water, is an important example. The standard defines different types and grades of reagent water and recognizes that alternative technologies may be used when the resulting water meets the required specifications. Parameters addressed include conductivity or resistivity, pH, silica, sodium, chlorides, TOC, endotoxins and microbiological contamination.

This does not make distillation irrelevant.

Distillation remains an established laboratory water-treatment technology and can still play an important role in producing high-quality water for specific applications.

The bigger change is the way laboratories approach equipment selection.

Instead of asking only:

“Which laboratory water distiller should we buy?”

the more useful question is:

“What water quality does our application actually require?”

Chemical analysis, microbiological testing, sample preparation, glassware cleaning and research applications may have different water-quality requirements.

For this reason, laboratory water systems should be designed around the intended application.
